I learned to develop modular code by hand without the benefit of SDKs, using only a terminal interface in a Linux environment to compile programs for advanced mathematical solutions. Using anything else by comparison is a breeze. These days occasionally I like to nerd out with GSuite to produce integrated apps for business processes. At the moment I'm working to stitch together some freeware APIs to create a comprehensive alternative to some SaaS applications for common businesses problems (payroll, HR, bookkeeping and accounting).
